Trip protection insurance is important during your travel. As a traveling healthcare provider there is limited time to get to your assignment. Trip insurance is for the mad dash flight to your first day at a hospital you have never layed eyes on. It is for when you are leaving Georgia sunshine and have to be in snowy Washington state in less than 4 days. It is alot of planning in a short amount of time. Flights are just one of the avenues that offer trip protection. Many rental car facilities offer it as well. If your trip gets canceled, delayed, or you have an emergency or lost luggage your trip is protected with an insurance policy the company offers. Now it does cost more but it is peace of mind you are paying for.
What is covered?
A specific insured trip will offer Trip cancellation, trip interuption, travel delay, baggage loss, and baggage delays. If you have a prexisting medical condition that makes you sick that prevents you from going on your trip the insurance will cover a portion or all of the canceled trip amount if you cancel before the trip. Up to 500 dollars is a typical refund. If your medical condition interupts your trip, then the insurance will cover the interuption. Up to 745 dollars is a typical refund amount. If your trip plans are delayed, it will cover the trip up to a allowed amount. The refund amount is typically 75-150 dollars. If your bag is damaged, stolen, or lost during your trip the insurance will cover an allowed amount up to 500 dollars. If your baggage is delayed by a travel carrier, they will pay out if the delay is 24 hours. That occurance is typically 100-400 dollars. Trip insurance also carries an epidemic or pandemic coverage where certain losses are covered.
Is it worth the extra money?
Yes, it is worth the extra 20 to 30 bucks to get peace of mind for your trip. Can you imagine getting to the airport and your flight has been cancelled due to the unfortunate event of a mechanical error. Spending hours waiting for the next flight and altering all of your trip details is a nightmare. Not to mention, if you arrive to your flight and you begin perfusly vomiting. Trust me, they dont want you on that flight either. How about getting to your destination and you have a heart attack and can’t enjoy your trip. The money you spent on your trip is covered as long as it is within the insurance rules. Make sure you read all the fine print. Trip insurance is a method of assurance your money isn’t wasted if you have a real problem.
Travel Insurance vs Trip Insurance?
Travel insurance may be a bit different from trip insurance. Travel insurance is sometimes offered through travel agencies on a broader spectrum. If you are planning a trip that is all inclusive as with a vacation trip where the travel agency books your entire trip including flight, rental cars, excursions, and hotel or resorts then you want their travel insurance. Trip insurance is a coverage for a specific flight, hotel, rental car, or excursion. Most individual bookings ask you if you want to buy their specific trip insurance. You will want trip insurance if you are planning outside of a travel agency and your bookings are not all at the same time. In essence, if you book a flight to your working destination and then plan an excursion two weeks later you will want individual trip insurance. Both provide a level of reassurancce that your trip is refundable during emergencies or problems out of your control.

is it best to take out this sort of insurance with a travel agent or your bank? which is the more cost effective option?
Hi Michel. Thank you for the comment and questions. I will look deeper into this question. This article is discussing trip insurance and that is usually independent from an entire booking from a travel agent or travel company. I understand that travel agencies offer travel insurance and so do some banks when you use their credit card for the trip. I also understand that travel agencies will guarantee the trip with the insurance option through them, but if you are booking yourself then you will need to use your bank credit card option to insure your trip. The cost effectiveness will be determined by which option you choose to book and their price options. Rates vary per the type, length, and luxury of the trip. One vacation may not cost the same as another. Nor will the options be the same. I hope this helps. Happy Traveling!
By coincidence, I was wondering what was included in a trip insurance company, as I want to travel to South Africa this year in September, but I might cancel it because of health reasons. Could I cancel my flight with these companies and the plane ticket reimbursed? Because that last one is a huge amount of money and hiring a car as well. Thanks!
Hello Lizzy,
So, it will depend on how you book your trip. If you will be getting a travel agent to book through, then I would use travel insurance through that company. If you are booking individually, then definitely take advantage of the companies personalized trip insurance. The reimbursements will be based on that companies policies. So you need to read all the information before you book. To answer your question, typically with trip insurance you get either a refund or a credit to use later. Like I said, read the fine print so you know what their policy is. I hope you enjoy South Africa! Happy Traveling!
Thank you for discussing the difference between trip and travel insurance! I’ve been looking at flights to CA and Mexico to visit friends and get a little intimated when it comes to purchasing insurance. But you’re right it’s better to pay that extra amount and have some peace of mind, then to not have it and be out of money and trip.
Hello Beelyta! And yes it can be a little intimidating trying to decide whether to get the insurance or not. Each time you do not get it, you will be hoping nothing happens and your trip runs smoothly. So to me… it is worth the peace of mind to purchase it. Happy Traveling!
Purchasing travel insurance is an absolute necessity due to the fact that so many things have the potential to go wrong, and it is preferable to be protected against unforeseen occurrences. The traveler will have peace of mind as a result, and will be able to concentrate more fully on reaching his destination and making the most of his vacation. I appreciate you taking the time to explain the distinction between trip insurance and travel insurance. This incredible essay will most certainly be shared by me.
Thank you and you’re welcome. I am glad you enjoyed the read. Trip insurance and travel insurance are super important to have peace of mind that you are covered if the unthinkable happens.
Hi there! I just came across this post on trip protection insurance and I must say, it’s got me thinking. I’ve been on plenty of trips in my time, both for work and pleasure, and I’ve never really thought about getting trip protection insurance. But after reading this post, I’m starting to see the value in it.
First off, I have a question. Can you buy trip protection insurance at any time before your trip or do you have to get it at the time of booking? I think this is an important thing to know, especially for those of us who like to plan ahead.
So, what is trip protection insurance exactly? From what I gather, it’s a type of insurance that covers you for things like trip cancellations, interruptions, and emergency medical expenses. I can definitely see the appeal in having this kind of insurance, especially if you’re traveling to a foreign country. The last thing you want is to get sick or have your trip cut short due to unexpected circumstances, and not have any coverage.
Now, I’m sure some of you might be thinking, “I already have travel insurance through my credit card, why do I need trip protection insurance?” And that’s a good point. But, as this post mentions, credit card travel insurance may not cover everything that trip protection insurance would. So, it’s important to do your research and make sure you’re getting the best coverage for your specific needs.
In my opinion, I think trip protection insurance is definitely worth considering, especially if you’re planning a big trip or traveling to a foreign country. You never know what could happen, and it’s always best to be prepared. Plus, having the peace of mind knowing you’re covered in case something goes wrong is priceless.
All in all, I think this post does a great job of explaining what trip protection insurance is and why it’s important to have. I hope it’s helpful for those of you who are planning trips in the near future. And for those of you who have had experience with trip protection insurance, feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments. Cheers!
Hi Bob! Thank you for the great comment. It is much appreciated. Your trip insurance is kind of like a warranty you buy on an entertainment item or an appliance item if you will. So, It will be up to the agency that you use whether or not they offer trip insurance to purchase after you have booked. I always ask if it is necessary for me to make the decision now or if it can be added later. Sometimes like appliances, if you purchase the item you can change warranties or add extended warranties later. It is something you will have to discuss with the agency. My experience is that when it is offered to me through the company when I book, I purchase it at that time.
Happy Traveling! 🙂
Thank you for sharing this valuable information. I have not heard of trip insurance only the travel insurance. Since me and my wife like to travel, it is a good idea to check both insurances for the best protection. My wife left on Thursday for New Zealand and she arrived in Auckland. This post is definitely informational and so valuable for people that love to travel. It’s better to be protected from things you have no control over.
Hello Vaisingano Kosi! Yes, it is always better to be safe than sorry. A loss in money is always painful. However, utilizing the trip insurance or travel insurance is a whole lot less than the trip itself. I hope your wife has a great time in Auckland, New Zealand. I wish her and you safe travels. Happy Traveling!
